BANDUNG. World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to nearly 6 million deaths each year worldwide, including 600,000 of which are the results of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. In the past twenty years, the day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance around the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry.
On the other hand, the dangers of cigarette have endangered Indonesian people. Therefore, to remind the public about the dangers smoking, RZ and Cita Sehat Foundation (CSF) initiated to organize “Stop Smoking with Persib” in Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Wednesday (27/5).
In this action, RZ and CSF invited supporters of Persib Bandung Football Club to commemorate World No Tobacco Day 2015 by exchanging a cigarette for a fruit. In addition, RZ and CSF also distributed anti-smoking stickers to all supporters who attended AFC Competition; Persib Bandung vs Kitchee Hongkong.
“They think that to buy fruits and vegetables are expensive while they can buy 2 packs of cigarette per day. It doesn’t make sense for us,” Nur Efendi, CEO of RZ, said.
By the implementation of the action, RZ and CSF expect that people can realize the danger of smoking and encourage the government to protect its people from it. ***
