Once upon a time, Aisha RA once asked the Prophet, “Tell me, O Messenger of Allah, what do you think, if I know one night is Lailatul Qadr. What do I say in it? “He replied,” Say (Ask for): Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu anni’”O Allah actually Thou merciful who loves the apology, forgive me.” (Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah).
Exploring the wording on lailatul Qadr night prayer, In that prayer, God called the ‘Afuwun. Not Ghafur. Imam al-Ghazali, as M Quraish Shihab was quoted as saying in Tafsir al-Mishbah, distinguish both word. Al-‘Afuw implies remove, uproot something, destroy, and so forth.
While al-Ghafur means closed, something which closed essentially fixed form but invisible, while if it deleted it will gone or at least it will only leaving a mark. People who receive Allah’s apology his sins will be erased. Is there a higher happiness in life than obtaining forgiveness of Allah?
In the book of Bustanul Khatib told, the famous sufi, al-Hasan Al-Bashri (died 110 H) visited someone who complained of famine and drought, so he counseled, “Do istigfar” Then, come again another person complaining of poverty, he advised, ” Do istigfar” Then comes the more people complain about his child problem, the sufi said,” Do istigfar ”
One of his students asked, “Why istighfar is the solution?” Hasan al-Basri said, “Do not you read the word of Allah in Surah Nuh verse 10-12:” And I have said: Seek pardon of your Lord. Lo! He was ever Forgiving, He will let loose the sky for you in plenteous rain, And will help you with wealth and sons, and will assign unto you Gardens and will assign unto you rivers”
People who receive forgiveness and apologies Allah also will be spared from the torment of hell fire so that he entered into heaven. (Surah Ali Imran : 133). Even Allah undoes the punishment in a world when there are still people who do Istigfar (Surat al-Anfal : 33).
In the life of the nation, Muslims must often do Istigfar so that Allah do not bestow total punishment due to its doom injustice committed by handful of people (Surat al-Anfal : 25).
So make this Ramadan as a month of muhasabah, recalling the many sins we have done, so it encourages us to ask for forgiveness of Allah.
Yahya bin Muadh said, “Anyone who do Istigfar orally, but his heart is still bound by immorality, still intends to go back and repeat the sin after Ramadan the fast is rejected. And the receipt doors of good deeds will be closed in front of his face. ”
It has also been disclosed Ibn ‘Ata Allah al-Sarkandi in Buhtaj al-Nufus, “People beg Allah’s forgiveness but is still immersed in vice is like a sick person ask for medicine to the doctor and drank it, but he let the snake bit himself.”
While still in the last ten of Ramadan, let us increase the quality of our worship by fasting, nights prayer, Reviewing Qur’an, do sadaqah, iktikaf, and certainly do multiply Istigfar, with expectations we met with lailatur Qadr night.
If we fail to achieve God’s forgiveness, the prophet said, “It was very offended and low someone who came to the month of Ramadan later pardoned passed before him (his sins).” (Tirmidhi).
Always be then filed a request on every night of Ramadan,
“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun karim tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu anni’.” Amin.
