WELCOME GEN-Q

Is it still relevant pinning the epithet and naming a generation based on the year of birth and characteristics? Gen X (born 1966-1976, called the ‘lost generation’ or skeptical generation with low social awareness), Gen Y (born 1977-1994, ‘technology and internet minded’, internet victims but not the main actor, the modern and difficult to be loyal to one thing), and Gen Z (born 1995-2012, a generation that becoming active participants multimedia via computer and the Internet, a quick learner and very ‘multi-tasking’). Academically, the study is never finish because the birth signifies self-forming environment and human character. But let’s look deeper. In a study of the socio-technology, The grouping of gen was sharply criticized.

Four decades back, there was a wide gap between the information among the hemisphere. This information gap made time distances seem long. Gen X who were born in 1966-1976 referring to the socio-cultural situation that occurred in the west (Europe and America). Most of that generation interacts very intense with color television, pop music group and the cold war when growing up. While, it did not occur in Asia and Africa who just grow, vigorously but in the local context. Hot news takes a time to spread to southern states which are contains 70% of the earth population of the earth – which is underdeveloped or developing. New trends take time to be adopted. News & trends are the things that form collective mindset of a generation. In the world that increasingly flat and connected, the definition of Gen Y and Gen Z that appear afterwards no longer suitable.
So, welcome to Q generation. A generation which is defined by the intention appears to be a character, the birth year is not a thing that will affect the environment and personality anymore because the external environment can no longer be distinguished. The world became a small village that we will know each other and influence each other. Only some remote areas in Africa is untouched by technology, computers, tablets and internet. Currently, influencers are humans who were born in 1976, 1986 and 1996 was almost the same because they receive similar information which appear in networks and digital ecosystems iTunes, Youtube, Facebook, snapchat, LINE and Instagram. And personalization idol as Maroon5, One Direction, Lewis Hamilton, Taylor Swift, Kendal Jenner, and Barack Obama became difficult to distinguish between anyone who is living on the earth today.

This social phenomenon is very much emerging around us. Begin with a community who gathered because of a common interest and passion. Nowadays, there is more fluid collaboration and people can gather for various purposes such as business, social and humanitarian movements. Co-Working Space (Collaborative Working Space, a joint work-plan with a places and organizations) increasingly mushrooming. We know Crowdfunding, rollicking funding aimed to resolve social problems even to fund a business on seeding phase. Likewise collaborative blogging is happening as well. Social applications such as GPS for medical assistance through the drones in conflict areas were currently produced jointly by drone activists from various countries (case study: Uplift Aeronautic, USA). In business, the manufacturer also affected. He must be ‘willing to share’ with other allied business service providers. Manufacturers do not need to be good in everything. They can ask the other party to manufacture power bank products, the other party to market, and the other one to do the delivery. They just need to have the technology and brand rights.

Generation Q (Qolaborative) is the owner of a character born from wisdom in themselves because they see the world in perspective without border less and see technology as an enabler, not as an addictive monster anymore. That time has passed. Gen-Q did not see the birth time, but their intention and active characteristics. Qollaborative generation is described by S. James Gates Jr., a scientist in the field of theoretical physicist at the University of Maryland as a generation that (1) has the desire to create ‘social shifting’ that is a significant social change, (2) Comfortable with technology and always connected with the outside world via the Internet.

The whole explanation of Qollaborative Generation, it can be concluded in three main Gen-Q characteristics, including:
1) Qreactive. A combination of QREATIVE and ACTIVE. They are actively looking for problems in the surroundings and finding creative solutions. Gen-Q picks high initiative, restless and has a high concern. People with Qreactive character want to be the initiator and the motor change for the better.
2) Qonnected. Gen-Q be friends and have access to various groups, communities, and society level. They are able to encourage people to move to support. Gen-Q is a Social Leaders in offline and online meaning.
3) Quality Oriented. Gen-Q can inspire through the action, moving through communication. But they chose significant knot changes, which are important, bring major changes. And the change was primarily would bring improved quality of life together.
