Kemudian, dia mengerjakan shalat sunat bersama orang-orang.

(HR Muslim).

Solar and lunar eclipses are a sign of the greatness of Allah SWT. With this occurrence, it is hoped that humans can return to being grateful and think of the signs of His power and greatness.

There are some lessons behind the natural phenomena of solar or lunar eclipses. Quoting the book Meneladani Shalat-Shalat Sunnah Rasulullah by Muhammad bin Umar bin Salim Bazmul, is told from the history of Aisha, that during the time of Rasulullah SAW there was also a solar eclipse. Then, he performed the circumcision prayer with the people. He prayed while standing and extending the time of his standing, then he was bowing and extending his bowing.

Then, the Prophet SAW stood up again (rose from his bowing) and lengthened his standing once again. However, the next ruku’ is not as long as the first ruku’. Then, he prostrated and extended his prostration and did so for up to two cycles.

After that, the Prophet witnessed the sun that had reappeared. After that, he gave a sermon in front of the crowd and offered praises to Allah, narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim, that at that time the Prophet SAW said,

“Verily the sun and moon are two (signs) of Allah’s power. Both of them did not experience an eclipse because of someone’s death and not because of someone’s life. Therefore, if you see this, you should doa’ to Allah, do takbir, pray, and give alms.”

Thus, it can be concluded that the eclipse should be able to increase our faith by doing many good things such as praying, doa, and giving alms. In addition, among the wisdom of the eclipse prayer is as follows:

  1. Remembering the greatness of Allah

Seeing the eclipse of the sun and moon directly, meaning that we see the greatness of Allah over the events of the universe. That way, a Muslim should believe more in His power that is so great that it can create such a great solar eclipse. Not only that, but Allah also gave a picture of the eclipse to surah al Qiyamah (75): 7-12

“So when the eyes are wide open (scared), and the moon has also lost its light, then the sun and moon are collected (there was an eclipse), on that day humans say, “Where to run?” No! There is no shelter! Only to your Lord is where one returns to that day.”

That way, we should be able to make this solar eclipse phenomenon as a means to draw us closer to Allah and realize how small a human being is because only to Him we can take refuge.

  1. Social event and pray together

On the eclipse, it was recommended by the Prophet SAW to do a lot of good, one of them with the sunnah prayer in congregation.

Based on the hadith narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim, from Abdullah bi ‘Amr, he said: “When a solar eclipse occurs at the time of the Prophet Muhammad, called for ‘Innasshalaati Jaami’atun’ (this prayer is done in congregation)”

  1. Signs of Day of Judgement

The natural phenomenon of a solar eclipse is one sign of the coming of the day of Judgement. Abu Musa al-Ash’ari RA said, “There was a solar eclipse in the time of the Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet then stood afraid because he was worried that Judgment Day would occur. “(HR Muslim).
