Hunger, Floods, and Displacement: Stand with Niger Today

by | Jul 21, 2025 | Berita English

Niger is facing a multidimensional crisis, driven by extreme climate events, rapid population growth, and chronic poverty. The country remains extremely vulnerable, with limited capacity to absorb shocks. As of September 30, 2024, Niger reported over 507,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs), a 12% increase from the previous year.

The Tillabéri and Diffa regions are the hardest hit, hosting around 78% of the total displaced population. Even the previously unaffected Dosso region reported 5,000 new IDPs as of September 30. This crisis is further exacerbated by severe flooding that has impacted over 1.4 million people across the country. The floods have worsened the already dire humanitarian situation, causing widespread displacement, destroying infrastructure, and threatening food security.

More than 436,000 children under five are suffering from severe acute malnutrition. According to the Cadre Harmonisé, 3.2 million people are currently facing critical food insecurity. The floods have destroyed at least 23,000 hectares of farmland, putting even more pressure on food availability.

This crisis has significantly reduced the purchasing power of vulnerable communities, making food assistance a lifeline for many families during these difficult times.

As of April 20, 2025, Algerian authorities deported over 1,100 migrants, one of the largest deportations in years. In the same month, nearly 4,000 migrants were expelled to Assamaka. This is part of a longstanding trend, with over 30,000 deportations recorded in 2024 alone. Many of these migrants are left in the desert without food or water, forced to walk for hours under extreme heat, often reaching 40°C to reach the refugee transit site in Assamaka.

In Assamaka, infrastructure is extremely limited. Social services are unable to meet the growing needs of both the local population and stranded migrants. The migrant shelter camp is under immense pressure, facing shortages of resources, delays in registration, and a severe lack of food.
