Ramadan Fasting just passed by the celebration of Eid. Expectation to be reunited with the upcoming Ramadan is also very high. Because Ramadan is a special month: full of grace, blessings and forgiveness from Allah SWT for them who fast with faith, science, and the hopes of gaining His blessing.
Ramadan is so special, the Prophet once said, “If the servant knows privileges that exist in the month of Ramadan, then he must have awaited throughout the year to be Ramadan.” (Reported by at-Thabarani).
Perfect fasting does not end with the completion of Ramadan. As proof of the consistency and obedience to Allah, Ramadan fasting need to be refined by fasting six days in Shawwal. If added with fasting six days in Shawwal, then the value of our fasting is equal to a year of fasting.
The Prophet said, “Who is fasting for Ramadan, followed (continued) with six days fasting in Shawwal, then his fast is like a year fasting.” (Muslim, Abu Dawud, at-Turmudzi, and Ahmad).
According to Imam Nawawi in Sharh Sahih Muslim, six days fasting in Shawwal function as Ramadan as a complement of ramadhan because it can round the value and reward of fasting Ramadan so that it is equal to a year fasting. The Hadith of the Prophet SAW quite logical and contextual.
According to ilahi mathematics, any good deeds that value-double folded into 10 times (Surah al-Qasas : 84). Fasting Ramadan (a month x 10) equal to 10 months fasting, whereas six days fasting in Shawwal (6 days x 10) is equal to 60 days fasting = 2 month. 10 months plus 2 months equal to one year fasting.
Medically, according to a study at the University of California, fasting Ramadan and six days in Shawwal proven to cleanse the remnants of food (garbage in the body), toxins and bad cholesterol for approximately one year.
A day of fasting can detoxify toxins and remnants of food in the body for 10 days. Moreover, fasting in a certain period of time (such as Ramadan and six days of Shawwal) proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, boost immunity against the disease, and kill the growth of cancer cells, bacteria, and viruses in the body.
To be more perfect, the results of the research also suggested that the habit of fasting two days each week (fasting on Mondays and Thursdays), or at least fasting three days each month (on 13, 14 and 15).
Thus, consistency in performing religious observance, such as sunna fasting beyond Ramadan, not only affects the psychological, mental and spiritual, but also serve to improve the physical fitness and health.
As a complement of Ramadan, Shawwal fasting it also function to clean the sin of the past. In line with the hadith, the Prophet once said, “Anyone who fasts Ramadan, followed by fasting six days in Shawwal, then he will come out of his sins like a newborn child ” (Reported by at-Thabarani).
Fasting six days in Shawwal is very useful and multifunctional for every Muslim in order to enhance the reward of Ramadan worship, maximize the forgiveness of Allah and closeness to Him, as well as showing the nature of steadfastness in obedience and closeness to Allah SWT.
Shawwal Fasting is actually also a learning process fasting period and cross situation and conditions, so shaimin and shaimat be used to control themselves and have mental and spiritual formidable defense in him. Mental and spiritual defense is urgently needed to deal with the various temptations of life are often deceptive and misleading.
