During this time, the touch of mother is associated with the form of affection to the child. Indeed, the touch has been given the mother since the child is still in the womb, before bed, even when the child has grown up.
Psychologist from the Institute of Applied Psychology University of Indonesia (LPTUI), Vera Itabiliana Hadiwidjojo, said touch helps build and strengthen the emotional bond between mother and child. “If the touch happens continuously the child will feel connected with his mother, so the relationship between the two will be more closely,” said Vera.
In addition to the effect on emotional bonding, according to Vera, a mother’s touch actually provides greater benefits, especially for children’s intelligence.
When the mother touches her child, both will produce hormone ocytosine. This hormone can reduce stress and make children feel relaxed. When relaxed, the child’s brain is ready to learn.
Not only academic intelligence, this mother’s touch also fell on the emotional intelligence of children. Children become able to regulate emotions and interact with others.
“It all happens if mother and child are both comfortable,” Vera said.
According to Vera, there is no age limit in giving a touch to the child. Touch shape can be customized based on the age of the child. For a young child can be by hugging or carrying him. For children who are teenagers or adults can with a touch on the cheek or swab on the shoulder.
