HEALTHY FOOD THAT CAN BECOME EVIL

Some types of food are called healthy because they contain nutrients the body needs. However, healthy foods can turn bad when they are consumed wrong.

Reported via boredpanda, Tuesday (8/10), several recent studies say, the side effects of these healthy foods can cause depression to cancer in the long run. The following explains.

Milk

Milk is famous for its many benefits to the body. However, a recent study from the British Medical Journal actually says the opposite. The researchers found that women who drank three or more cups of milk each day could have a 90 percent higher risk of death over a 20-year period, compared with women who consumed less than that amount.

They also have an increased risk of fractures and higher levels of inflammation and oxidative stress. In fact, high sugar content in milk can actually rule out its benefits.

Seafood

Seafood can be a source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids that are good for the heart. However, it is not uncommon for seafood to come from water that is contaminated with large amounts of heavy metals, especially mercury.

To stay safe, choose fish from the open sea and avoid buying imported fish that are cultivated on farms because these are usually poorly checked and tend to have excessive chemical residues. In general, salmon, shrimp, canned tuna and tilapia are some seafood with lower mercury.

Red rice

Researchers have linked several types of rice with increased arsenic in women. Rice absorbs arsenic from the soil, and rice mainly builds up on the outer shells of brown rice.

“High amounts of arsenic exposure have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and other diseases,” said Diane Gilbert-Diamond, a researcher and professor at the Geisel Medical School at Dartmouth College in Hanover, Germany.

Fried Oil

Although some varieties offer healthy fats, a review published in June 2014 in Environmental Health, found that it also has high phthalate levels, a chemical known as an “endocrine disruptor” associated with cancer and a number of other health problems. Therefore, use low-fat oils such as canola and olives, also choose a glass container for oil, because plastic eventually brings phthalate.

Fruit Drink

Do not be attracted by vitamin C offered in this drink, according to a study published in PLoS ONE in April 2014. People who drink four or more cups of fruit drinks per day have a 38 percent greater chance of experiencing depression over the next decade.

Sweet drinks can also cause obesity, diabetes, and overall poor health, and can contribute to the development of depression.

Spicy Foods

Spicy foods can indeed improve circulation, reduce sugar blood, and increase metabolism. However, excessive consumption can backfire, such as causing stomach pain in some people.

Although usually not dangerous, hot spices stimulate certain brain cells that trigger pain due to increased stomach acid. Write down if you have stomach problems after consuming spicy foods and talk to your doctor about possible links to drugs that are also being consumed.

Tea

From preventing cancer, heart disease to dementia, tea seems to be a magical drink. But a recent study shows you might want to avoid a number of tea brands that have quite affordable prices. That is because this tea often has three times the amount of fluoride, which in turn causes tooth and bone problems.

Seaweed

Seaweed is a very important source of iodine for thyroid health, however, this can eventually lead to thyroid dysfunction, if too much is consumed.

According to Angela M. Leung, professor at the UCLA Faculty of Medicine David Geffen School of Los Angeles, seaweed contains very high amounts of iodine, and therefore should not be consumed excessively. The recommended iodine limit is 1,100 mcg daily.

Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts contain very high selenium, an important nutrient that helps regulate hormones and protect the body against infection. However, consuming only half a dozen of these nuts can actually make you exceed the recommended daily limit.

Over time, a buildup of selenium can cause hair and nail loss, and skin rashes. In fact, it can also make weight loss, fatigue, and damage to the nerve.
