Suriah[:en]The United Nations (UN) states that nearly 12% of children in East Ghouta suffer from acute malnutrition-the highest level ever recorded since the start of the war in Syria. At least five out of 130 children died of starvation and lack of medical treatment.

“The price of food in the market is very high, people eat once a day. There are a lot of people begging on the streets – kids, parents, it’s a big deal,” said Al-Shami, one of the Ghouta residents who lost 10 family members as their home attacked.

“To keep ourselves warm during the winter months, we burn furniture, like cabinets, chairs – anything made of wood, that has become our reality,” Al-Shami explained.

To help alleviate the condition of Syrian children with food shortages, Rumah Zakat distributes bread for 1,000 children in East Ghouta.

“These children are stuck in refugee camps, they cannot get out because if they get out, they could be hit by a bomb that continues to be waged into civilian settlements. As a result, they are cold and hungry in the refuge, “explained Andri Murdianto, Crisis Center Department Head of Rumah Zakat.

“May the food aid from the people of Indonesia can slightly lighten their burden and make them stronger to survive in the current conditions,” added Andri.
